Comments for MCEJO submitted for Luhlanga Scoping Report

Public meeting for Luhlanga Pit extension, Somkhele – 26 Jan 2019

A Public Meeting was held at Luhlanga in Somkhele on the 26 January as part of the environmental authorisation process for the proposed Luhlanga Pit extension.

Somkhele Anthracite Mine intends to extend it’s existing Luhlanga opencast pit and rock dump. The Luhlanga pit extension is approximately 18ha. The proposed extension includes an increase in the footprint of the waste rock dump to 50 Ha, making the total extension 68 Ha.

This expansion will require environmental authorisation in terms of the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998 (NEMA).

Youens Attorneys, acting for The Mfolozi Community Environmental Justice Organisation (MCEJO) have submitted comments to Black Rock Environmental Consultants, who are conducting the EIA process.
